Thu June 5, 2025

DeKalb, IL—Grab your fishing poles and tackle boxes and head to the lake for a morning of outdoor fun at the DeKalb Park District’s Annual Fishing Derby! This family-friendly event takes place Saturday, June 14, from 8:30–11:00 am at Mason Park/Larson Lake, located at 455 S. Annie Glidden Road.

Anglers of all ages are invited to cast their lines for a chance to win prizes and awards in both youth and adult categories. Awards will be given for the Longest Catch, Shortest Catch, and Most Fish Caught—so be sure to bring your bucket and best fishing game!

“Fishing is not only good for your mental and physical health, it’s simply a lot of fun,” said Recreation Supervisor Sabrina Hunley. “It’s a great opportunity to enjoy time outdoors with your dad or grandfather in one of DeKalb’s most beautiful parks.”

Registration is just $8 for residents and $10 for non-residents. The Derby will be held rain or shine, but participants are encouraged to check the DeKalb Park District Rainout Line for updates in case of severe weather.

The event coincides with one of Illinois’ Free Fishing Days, so no fishing license is required—making it the perfect time for beginners and pros alike to enjoy the sport.

Can’t make it on June 14? Fishing is always welcome at other Park District locations, including Lions Park, Hopkins Park, Prairie Creek Park, Prairie Park, and Rotary Park. Find these locations and more using our interactive park map.
